Green Tips 001: What Would Moop Fairy Do?
What is MOOP? Why does it matter? And how to green your quarantine.
Howdy friends, new and old! MOOP Fairy here to share with you some tricks and tips for maintaining green practices not only during festival season, but while holding space in our day-to-day lives, working from home, spending time with our loved ones, and while hitting those trails and parks we’ve been eyeing all quarantine.
“What does MOOP mean”, you ask? Beautiful question! For those who don’t know yet, MOOP stands for Matter Out Of Place, and is a neologism coined by the Burning Man community for essentially anything that is not originally of the land on which a particular event takes place.
So, in honor of last month’s 50th anniversary of Earth Day, here are 5 ways us MOOP Fairies can make a difference during quarantine:
Green billing! Change your paper bills to online e-bills. You will not only save trees, but also conserve the fuel and energy consumed to deliver the bills by planes, trains, and mail trucks. Finally, when you do buy paper, order 100% post-consumer recycled paper online!
If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down! Rather than waiting in line at early hours for toilet paper, pre-order plastic-free brands online! Check out brands such as: Who Gives a Crap, Reel, and Pure Planet Club.
Put up a mighty fine clothes line! Many of us are spending much more of our time at home, so why not use it by experimenting with putting up a clothes line, and letting our laundry dry all on its own.
Bright done right! Turn OFF and UNPLUG electronics and small appliances daily when not in use, and do not forget to turn off your computer at the end of the day! Replace incandescent light bulbs with efficient LEDs or CFLs. Utilize Smart LEDs, many of which are WiFi connected so that you can pair them with a motion sensor and save energy when no motion is detected.
Say NO to single use plastics! Please replace disposable plastics with your favorite reusable water bottle. These also make great gifts and can be easily personalized!
Most importantly, do not stress or “beat yourself up” if you are unable to eliminate medical waste during this pandemic. This goes for medications we might need during this time, even if they come in plastic. Our health must comes first!
